NFL defensive end Chris Long was inspired to start Waterboys when he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2013. He found it to be an amazing experience and wanted to give back to Tanzania. When he learned about the scarcity of drinking water there, he decided to do something about it.

Chris launched Waterboys in 2015 with the goal of drilling 32 sustainable deep borehole wells in Tanzania, one for each of the 32 teams in the NFL. According to Chris, “It’s a place where the American dollar goes a long, long way. On top of that, giving the gift of clean water can make a very tangible, measurable and instant difference.” The organization achieved its initial goal in 2018, helping more than 345,000 people gain access to a healthier, more productive way of life.

Waterboys then set an ambitious new goal: bringing clean water to one million people worldwide. It’s well on its way to achieving that goal, as well. To date, the organization has raised over $4 million with the help of more than 45 professional athletes. Through Waterboys, players and their fans are able to make a meaningful difference for communities in need.

Until recently, Waterboys has concentrated its efforts on East Africa. However, Chris believes that it’s also important to serve the many low income, rural and tribal communities right here at home that lack access to life-sustaining water. So Waterboys launched the Hometown H2o campaign, which provides U.S. communities with access to this fundamental resource.

Hometown H2o focuses on two main activities. First, it funds and drills wells for low-income households that don't have access to water. Second, it installs water bottle filling stations and filtration systems in community gathering places such as schools, libraries, recreation centers and parks.

One problem, Chris explains, is the fact that it’s harder financially to make a difference stateside. That’s why the partnership with Goulds Water Technology is so important to him. “Xylem is going to provide funding and top notch technology,” Chris said. “That’s a perfect partnership for us.” He added, “We’re so appreciative to have Xylem in the game with us as we fight for clean water.”
